Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But His word was in mine
heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.

The Centurion’s Servant

Matthew 8:5-13

The goal for this lesson is to learn from the Centurion in taking our issues before the Lord. For the Centurion he had a servant that was of great need to him. He cared and went
to a source that could heal the situation. By using this example let’s delve into the Centurion and learn how we too can come to the Lord with an issue that only He can handle.

PERSONAL QUESTIONS

Now we will look at the scripture and apply it to our lives. There are three main characters/people who can be used as example in various situations.

Jesus = Jesus Christ and who we should go to for all situations.
Centurion = this person represents you in this story.
Servant = this can be a person or situation that you are taking to God for prayer. For example a new job, health, finances, vehicles, family, friends, co-worker, Spiritual growth, or
anything else.

Some of the spaces below are for not only questions but comments as well. Use this as means and workshop for the Lord to heal whatever “servant” you need to be fixed. Below
are some steps to learn from the story to apply to your life.

1.) For the Centurion, Jesus reentered Capernaum at the right time. For you, recognize that Jesus will enter into your life at the right time to take care of the problem. There is
literally nothing too hard for God and He cares about anything that is holding you back. How does it make you feel knowing you have a caring God on your side to deal with any
situation you’re going through? Matthew 8:5

2.) The Centurion had a servant that was in need of healing. Write below what your “servant” or problem that is holding you back. Keep it real. The centurion came because a
servant was sick and needed help. If you have an issue (health, spiritual, financial, etc.) then write that down as your “servant” to bring before the Lord.

Why should we come to Jesus for help with our “servant” or issue instead of taking care of the matter ourselves?

3.) The centurion was humble before Jesus Christ, which is a quality that God desires in you. Why is it important to be humble? Matthew 8:8, Matthew 5:3-5, Luke 14:11, James 4:
10

4.) During his talk, the Centurion listed the skills and authority he had and none of this would work for the current problem of a servant with Palsy. Write out your skills or abilities
that you have to offer to God. Sometimes it’s useful and other moments it’s not. However, it’s still important to know why the Lord gave you talents and life lessons you currently
have.

5.) To the Centurion he believed all it would take is one word from the Lord and his problem would be taken care of. Believe that Jesus will handle and answer your request
according to His will. Remember that during the time of the Centurion, Jesus had helped various people before in Capernaum. The centurion knew that Christ had the ability he
was just asking if the Lord could do it for him.

Why is it important to rely upon the Lord to handle the “servant” situation according to His will?

6.) Lastly, believe as if you know Jesus will take care of the “servant” problem in your life. The centurion was able to leave with the knowledge that at the mere words of Jesus, his
servant was healed. When the Lord takes care of your situation, what will you do for Him? How will this experience be helpful in telling others about God?

Just A Thought

This is one of my favorite passages in the Bible. It reveals to us that you don’t have to be a person who is entrenched in the church to have faith in God. The centurion was a man
who heard of Christ’s miracles and believed that his own servant could be healed. We all have servants in our life that needs to be healed. It doesn’t have to be a particular
person but something this important for you to continue in the life that God has ordained. Albeit finances, health, spiritual growth, family, friends, and other issues; Jesus is more
then able to heal any situation that besets you. Believe in Him, and go to the Lord in faith knowing that His will shall be done.
