Mary, the wife of a prophet, learns from her husband’s dying breath that they owe a substantial debt. She knows that one of the most menacing collectors in the land will use any tactic to secure the money, even ruthlessly enslaving her children as payment. Mary has to heal from grief, protect her children, and navigate ancient Israel during a drought many believed was God’s punishment for worshiping false idols and gods.
“The Widow’s Oil” is a historical drama inspired by Biblical passages during the reign of Kings. Mary is pushed to the edge of resolving the debt to save her children from the hands of the cruel debt collector. Not only does Mary work on keeping her family together, but she also helps her neighbors with their problems and tries to diminish the influence of a burgeoning cult invading her town. She is bothered by the return of a friend who harbors a mysterious secret and a sinister plan for revenge. Mary must do what she can to help her friend while avoiding the same fate that could lead to her destruction. Despite grief, fear, and exhaustion, Mary will work hard around town to gather the means to pay the debt or see her sons be forced to work in a foreign land. “The Widow’s Oil” is an entertaining character study in perseverance, faith, and love during a time when all odds are against her success. Despite the hardships of life, the prospect of a stranger coming into town could lead to her deliverance, if Mary believes.
