BACKGROUND
“In The Beginning”, actually begun as a Bible study while working at Chase Bank. We had covered a variety of subjects and someone in the class wanted to know about the beginning of the Bible. This is because many of the studies we covered would reference characters in Genesis but not everyone knew about them. As a class we decided to cover the book of Genesis and give everyone at least a background on the first book of the Bible.
There are 26 lessons which is great because you can technically do easy into two separate 13 week sections. To be honest, this was not done on purpose. The design was to make sure that each chapter took approximately the same length. Because of that it just so happen to be 26 lessons.
COVER
Because Genesis was the first book of the Bible it only made sense to use a title that spoke to that and what better phrase then the opening few words. In future Biblical Study books, I might do the same thing, using pieces of the scripture as the title of the book. For the cover I was looking for something dramatic but not overly done. Once I came across this picture of an exploding star, then changed it, I knew that was the right cover. If you look closely at the part of the cover surrounding the pictures, you’ll notice that it’s the same pic. The inside and outside picture is the same, but the outside one is faded and blends into the color scheme.
To be honest I don’t have a favorite character from Genesis. I like them all. But, if I had to choose, it might be Jacob because he seemed so real. Here is a man who tricked his brother to get a special blessing and birthright, only to be tricked when he desires a wife. Jacob probably had a good heart, but he used human means to get things done. How many of us do the same? We often do things our way only to ask God for help later. To me that’s real. That’ s a person I can relate too, but there are other characters I love as well. Abraham, Joseph, and Noah.
This book was designed to help as you read the Bible, not to replace it. So to get the full effect of “In The Beginning”, you need a Bible. This way you can read the Bible and learn a variety of information or answer questions while you’re studying. It’s not meant to be overly difficult, just a means to provide basic understanding on the first book of the Bible. The personal questions in the end is to give the reader an opportunity to make what they read a little more personal. Often we look at the Bible as this far and distant book with super characters and amazing events. In reality they where people no different than you and me who did great things because of their relationship with God. That same relationship and power is available now, the problem isn’t God, but us.
The strangest story is Lot leaving Sodom (Lesson 10). From the large crowd in front of his door, to Lot offering his daughters, his wife becoming salt, and even the drunken mistake in the cave. After that, we learn the people that came from Lot and he’s never mentioned again. Lot is a great example on what can happen to people when you hang around the wrong crowd for too long. Sometimes their mindset and behavior affects you in ways that might not realize. I remember when going over the Sodom and Gomorrah lesson and how freaked out people where in the Bible Study at the various parts of the story.
KINDLE SUCCESS
I'm surprised at the success it has had on that format. I figure this is one of those books that you would need paper and pen, but people buy it and how that goes, but for now, enjoy “In The Beginning” and let me know what you think.
TITLE
The cover is a picture of a exploding star. The idea was to represent something being born or coming into being. But there was an idea for being dramatic as well.
