JUST A THOUGHT
John wrote on a unique and profound level, combining words, ideas, and thought patterns rarely seen in other Biblical writings. He allowed the Lord to speak through him, letting whatever needed to be expressed come forth. His writing intertwines prophetic, poetic, and metaphorical styles with practicality, directness, and brevity. At times, he depicts Jesus as the Word, emphasizing God’s love, while in other passages, he urges against hatred, acknowledging that sin is pervasive. As you study this epistle, you’ll notice the continual influence of Jesus on his life. Naturally, that influence should be evident, but often it’s not always visible. We often hear people speak about the Lord, yet their genuine relationship with Him may not be apparent. Reading this letter alongside the Gospel of John provides a deeper understanding of the text. John aimed to be engaging in his words and in the books he authored.
This was the disciple who wrote the book of Revelation. He received dreams and visions that were profound and awe-inspiring. When reading Revelation, parts of it read like a fantasy story, a sci-fi novel, an action-adventure tale, or a horror story, yet it is filled with truth, love, and glory. When John writes, it is clear he was passionate about what he was saying, and he chose to express himself in his way. Even if that means repeating information as often as necessary to emphasize its importance.
When reading 1 John, expect to encounter certain recurring themes and concepts. Occasionally, John mentions a point, then revisits it in later chapters, and sometimes reiterates it again. If you notice this, remember it’s intentional. John repeats himself not out of forgetfulness, but to emphasize key ideas and themes essential for your understanding of life on Earth. His repetitive approach is similar to reinforcing a memory, like repeating a number, name, or important fact, to help it stick. This method underscores the importance of the themes and ideas explored in this book.
Look at everything to understand how it relates to your life and what steps you can take to follow God’s will. Are you aiming to become more like the person God created you to be, rather than who the world expects? It’s challenging because there’s a temptation to imitate what we see and conform to societal trends. With the internet, we’re inspired by billions of people worldwide, many of whom don’t care about your happiness they seek views, money, likes, and attention. But if you’re reading this, it likely means you believe in a God who cares about your overall well-being. He didn’t create you to follow every new fad on social media, platforms, or news sites. Instead, He wants you to become the best version of yourself, and some of that growth begins right here, through this Biblical study.
As you can see, John started this epistle as he did his gospel, with Jesus being the Word and establishing Him at the beginning. This is our purpose as well. Start your mission, ministry, life, and even your day with Jesus. Start with the Word of God, and then navigate the rest of the day from there. Is it always easy? Nope. Can it bring joy and peace? Yes. Can it bring you closer to God? Yes. Can you become the person God desires, untainted by the influence of random people we deem celebrities or yourself? Yes.
Like John, embrace God's Word and allow it to shape you into what He desires. Then, become a powerful message, a ministry, or a shining beacon of peace and love for everyone you encounter, mirroring John’s example while expressing your unique character and mindset. You are capable of doing the same. May love flow through you so intensely that others can feel the love of Jesus emanating from you.
