Men's Bible Study
Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But His word was in mine
heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.
Jeremiah 20:9

If I Be Lifted Up
Part 1
The Cross and the Sacrifice
John 12:27-36 & Isaiah 53
This lesson, as with so many, will be broken down into three parts. The original idea grew to a point where it was better to study them as three different parts then one really long
lesson. What we’re doing is starting a foundation in Jesus then will grow to other subjects in the Bible. After all Christ Himself often stated and reminded people to make Him the
centralized point in ministry. This lesson will be split into 2 segments. The first are Biblical questions where the answer is within the scriptures listed. The second are Personal
questions that you will write and respond, so it makes the Word of God more special.
BIBLICAL QUESTIONS
1.) At the start of the week where Christ was to be crucified, He had gained enormous popularity. Who was looking for Christ and why do you believe they wanted to see Him?
John 12:20-22
2.) After learning about the outsiders, what metaphor did Jesus give to the people?
John 12:23-27
3.) What event happened between Jesus and the Father? How did the people respond?
John 12:28-29
4.) What was Jesus’ explanation of why the voice came and what will happen to Satan/Lucifer?
John 12:30-31
5.) The crux of the lesson is based off a few words that are actually repeated several times in the book of John. What are they and what is Christ referring to?
John 12:32-33
6.) How did the people respond and what did Jesus say to encourage them?
John 12:34-37
7.) At the time of Christ, to be crucified or hung on a tree was the worst possible thing. Where does this belief come from and what does the Old Testament laws say will happen to
the person and community?
Deuteronomy 21:22-23
8.) Jesus’ death was foretold in the Old Testament by the prophet Isaiah. What are some of the things that Jesus took upon Himself for us?
Isaiah 53:3-5, 10-12
9.) Knowing this, then what did Jesus do for us and how should we live.
Galatians 3:13; Galatians 2:20-21
10.) During Pentecost Peter gives a rousing sermon to a plethora of Jews from many cultures and background. He ends his sermon talking about one person. Who is it and what
does he say about Him?
Acts 2:30-36
11.) How did the people respond?
Acts 2:37-40
12.) What were the results?
Acts 2:41-47
PERSONAL QUESTIONS
A.) If Jesus came down and was put to death or did something that was appalling to our beliefs, how do you think we would react? Remember that to the Jews dying on a tree was
cursed, so it was tough to believe that a Messiah would die in such a fashion.
B.) Give at least one example on how you can reveal to people Jesus living in you.
C.) Why do you believe it’s important to lift up Jesus in ministry?
D.) Isaiah 53 is a detailed account of what Christ did on our behalf. Without sharing to anyone, what are some of the things/sins that the Lord took on in your behalf? (You do not
have to share this list; this is between you and Jesus). Now after writing a few of them down, give God the praise for suffering so you don’t have to.
Next week we’re going to continue this lesson and talk about the Bronze serpent that Moses had to lift to save his people. Jesus used this as an example of how he too would be
lifted up to save humanity. (John 3:13-14)
